Home Wi-Fi Security Checklist

Do this once with the router app open. Check the box only after you have seen the setting, not after you meant to.

Checklist

  • Admin password is no longer the one printed on the router.
  • Wi-Fi password is long and not a family name, pet, or address.
  • Security mode is WPA2 or WPA3. WEP and WPS are off.
  • Guest network is on, with its own password, for visitors and untrusted gadgets.
  • Remote management from the internet is off.
  • Firmware is up to date, or automatic updates are on.
  • You can name the devices on the network and there are no strangers.
  • The new admin password is saved in a password manager.
